Service Dog Project
The Order of the Eastern Star Service Dog Program began in 2009 as a General Grand Chapter Special Project but has now become the primary and identifying charity for the Order of the Eastern Star. Each jurisdiction, such as Georgia, has a member serving on the General Grand Chapter Service Dogs Committee and Georgia added Service Dogs as a standing committee at its annual session in June, 2019.
The Georgia OES Service Dog program provides “total care” sponsorship for service dogs at a Georgia non-profit facility. This organization trains dogs to perform skills specific to the needs of the recipient: general mobility assistance, diabetic alert, epilepsy/seizure alert, or other special needs. Each dog sponsored costs over $31,000 covering the medical, food, and teaching costs for the life of the dog. During the first three-year period, Georgia OES raised over $91,000 and three (3) dogs were sponsored. Service Dogs are valued working partners and companions to over 80 million Americans.
