Cancer Aid
Any member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Georgia who is afflicted with cancer, and who is financially unable to afford care and treatment can apply for aid. The first step in requesting aid is to fill out the request form and gather the required information. Once completed the application is turned in to the member’s Chapter for action. The Chapter is responsible for requesting the review of the Cancer Aid Committee, consisting of elected Grand Trustees. If aid is approved, the Trustees are empowered to authorize a monthly payment of an amount determined by the committee. The maximum amount an applicant can receive is $5,000 per year. After approval, a written update report must be submitted to the committee chairman every six months from the member’s attending physician. Should the need for aid extend beyond one year, an application for renewal of assistance must be made.

History
The Georgia OES Cancer Aid Fund began as a special project by Mrs. Mae Dickerson, WGM, and Dr. W.D. Hall, WGP, in 1947-1948. They felt the need to help members who were suffering with cancer and the financial drain from the treatments and medication. The Worthy Grand Matron reported at the end of the year that cancer had in some way touched the lives of almost every person in our Order. The members responded generously, and this was the beginning of the Georgia OES Cancer Aid Fund. Once Grand Chapter approved Cancer Aid as a permanent fund, a committee was appointed to administer this program.
